Frances Salazar (1936-2002) was a daughter of noted potter Flora Naranjo and a sister of Glenda Naranjo and Barbara Martinez from the Santa Clara Pueblo. She was the mother of potters Elaine Salazar, Sophie Cata and Yolanda Verde. She learned to make pottery from her mother and over the years won numerous awards for her pottery at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market.
“Pueblo pottery is made using a coiled technique that came into northern
Arizona and New Mexico from the south, some 1500 years ago. In the four-corners region of the US, nineteen pueblos and villages have historically produced pottery. Although each of these pueblos use similar traditional methods of coiling, shaping, finishing and firing, the pottery from each is distinctive.
